Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah; and he did what was good, right and true before the LORD his God. 2 Chronicles 31:20 Good: Jesus once declared that there was "only One Who is good." To do good is a God-thing, that is for certain. There are things we may do that are good, and these may or may not be noted by men. Be sure of this however, that they do not escape the ever-watchful gaze of the Father in Heaven. And yet a "good" thing may not properly prevail if it is lacking character and rightness. It will be weak and apt to falter without these other key ingredients. Right: The word 'right' is the root of righteous. When something is seen and we proclaim it as righteous, it may be viewed from many perspectives. An act of righteousness may be cloaked in 'irony' or 'poignancy,' completely apart from any notion of 'pleasantness.' At the root of righteousness is One Who is righteous and just and true. Acting out of a sense of justice or justness often involves a setting-right that is sorely needed, but does not result in smiles or warm pleasant feelings. True: True, or faithful, implies distinct obedience. There are many 'good' things we may do for God, and many 'right' actions and thoughts to behold. But to be faithful and obedient is the real telling point of true love. "And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments." These three traits of God then, when applied to man, are "perfect" only when combined. A man can be good, and yet lack the righteousness of being right. There are many who seem good, but that deny the Lord. Likewise, a man may seem right in his dedication to God, but lack the love that enables him to be good to his fellowman. Further, both of these actions may be exhibited in a faithless manner that grows out of pride rather that faithful, humble obedience. And so it requires all three traits "to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." To do a 'good' thing that is steeped in the 'righteousness' of God's justice and done out of simple 'true' and faithful obedience is perfection in God's eyes. Anything less is lacking. |
