" . . we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us . ."
Hebrews 6:18

"We who have fled . ."  Examine yourself in a spiritual mirror right now -- go ahead, it needs to be done.  Look closely, as if you were trying to determine just how noticeable those tiny wrinkles inexorably encircling your eyes and making a home at the corners of your mouth have become.  Well, what do you see?  Is there, in your mirror, a face staring back at you that is the countenance of one who has fled?  Are you, as J. B. Phillips coins it, a "refugee from this dying world?"

This gaze you see peering back at you -- is it the gaze of a refugee, one who possesses a depth in the eyes that speaks of the terrible longing for home and rest?  Or perhaps the image you perceive reveals a soft, puffy contentment with things as they are.  Are the eyes so shallowly sustained that they could never behold the vastness of the "depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God?"

If, during this looking-glass introspection, you perceived the latter reflection described above, then please, please, won't you reevaluate your spiritual moorings?  Those who truly have fled this world plead with you to join them in holding on to the hope God offers in His Son Jesus.
